Random Stuff of the Day – Wednesday 09.11.11

Good morning world! It’s 06:37 here in Hamburg. I’m still a bit sleepy. Last week was really nerve wrecking. My employer decided they couldn’t pay the wages and tell us about that at 17:30 on the 31st of october so there was plenty of time to take care of resulting problems (paying the rent etc.). Luckily everything worked out so far and the wages were paid 2 days later.

I fell back into some old habits though. I only took minor attempts at working out and slept longer than planned (especially on the weekend). But after a week of letting things slide I will get back into full speed this week. So it’s the second day in a row that I got up at 6 o’clock again.

I’m also working on a new workout routine complete with a diet plan and everything. Hopefully that will keep me motivated long enough to turn it into a habit.

Not everything was bad last week. I already told you that one of my goals for the near future is to take better care of my finances. So I went out and bought a book about the topic. It’s called “Cashkurs” (which is cashcourse in English) by Dirk Müller and is a pretty good and interesting read so far. I started to write down all my expenses which I will continue to do for at least the next months. It gives me a pretty good budget overview even after one week. Never had an idea before about how much I pay for food every week.

10 stellar things to do in the morning

You already know that I changed my sleeping habits for the better by getting up at 6 o’clock every day. At the same time I don’t have to go to bed earlier so I have 90 additional minutes every morning. It’s easier to get up in the morning if you have an awesome morning routine that you look forward to. It will also prevent you from getting back into your old habits. So here are some things you can do to start your day like a winner:

1. Take a deep breath – Or even better take lots of them. Smile while doing so and build some positive thoughts while keeping your eyes closed for a moment.

2. Stretch – You have been lying around for hours with propably minor movement at best. So give your entire body the chance to wake up by stretching it.

3. Eat some fruit you like – Fruits are awesome! They are healthy and delicious. So start your day with a good feeling by eating the fruit of your choice.

4. Have sex – This is the number 1 activity choice during the entire day. But nothing lets you start into a successful day like good morning sex.

5. Go running – Like I already told you I love running. And knowing that you already ran for miles while most of the town is just trying to get awake with buckets of coffee is just great.

6. Work out – Same thing here. Instead of working out in the evening after a long hard day try it in the morning. You will have plenty of time in the evening for other things and the feeling that you have already completed your work out will boost your confidence for at least the entire day.

7. Meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga – Start your day in stressless fashion by not checking mails or reading the latest horror news. Instead you’re calm and rested. Use that, sit down in a comfortable position and meditate for some time.

8. Drink a nice hot beverage – Especially when it’s cold in your bedroom and you want to stay in bed. Reward yourself for getting up anyway with your favourite hot drink.

9. Get some fresh rolls – There’s not much that smells as good as freshly baked bread and rolls. So visit your local bakery early in the morning when the smell of warm dough is still in the air.

10. Go for a walk – For those of you who don’t like running. The world is never more quiet then during the night and the early morning hours (weekends aside).

Random Stuff of the Day – Tuesday 01.11.11

Wages will be transfered today only one or two days late. That’s a real relief. None the less I will keep my eyes open for new job opportunities. Like I said this will not work in the long run. The job will never make me really happy. On the positive side I have a new (female) colleague who seems to be very nice.

Random Stuff of the Day – Monday 31.10.11

Woohoooo! What an awesome day. I spent the last days with a book about saving money. So today I wake up motivated and ready to get rich. Then at around 10 o’clock rumors start spreading that this months wages will be payed 1 to 2 weeks later. AWESOME! It’s the 31. of october, I have about -500€ on my bank account and tomorrow I will have to pay my rent. Now isn’t this beautiful! Walked up to my boss, told him that this doesn’t work for me and that I have no savings etc.. So he gave me 600€ cash so I can at least pay my rent. Which is nice. My parents are going to help me out too even though they are on holiday in spain right now. Just love my parents. Will start looking for a new job today. This will not work for me in the long run and I don’t get even half decent money. No sir I can do better than that!

Random Stuff of the Day – Saturday 29.10.11

  • The new Forza Motorsport 4 is one kick-ass racing game. So gorgeous!
  • Had a nice friday evening playing Poker with friends while drinking 1 or 2 cold beers and 1 or 2 shots of Absinth. That stuff gets you drunk really fast. I ended up third after going all in with one pair of eights.
  • Need to push my finances. Will propably make that the next challenge.

Random Stuff of the Day – Tuesday 25.10.11

Had two business appointments today that went really well. Training went well, too. My confidence is really growing these days. Will propably try out a local Toastmasters group tomorrow or next week. There’s also an open Parkour training session on sunday which I’m quite interested in.

On a sidenote Microsoft is a total ass for cutting the Mercenaries mode out of the german version of Resident Evil 4 HD. Will propably cancel my XBOX Live account just for that reason. Doesn’t fit too well with my goals anyway.

Challenge Update

It’s been almost 2 weeks since I started my first challenge. Since my first training I tweaked the Angry Birds Workout quite a bit. I still do push ups and planks, 2 back exercises (upper and lower back) and I do squats every second training so I can still go running once or twice a week. I added biceps curls, inverted push ups and I press weights above my head (no idea how that’s called).

I also try to maintain a healthy diet. Basically a lot of protein (chicken, tuna, whey shakes), vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds and not so many carbo hydrates. Only water and tea, no alcohol. I also try out creatine for the first time. 5g every morning and 5g after every training.

Random Stuff of the Day – Monday 24.10.11

So far I’m struggling with writing content. I propably haven’t written texts since school so that shouldn’t come as a surprise. To get some training I will try to write something every day for the next few weeks. At least a few sentences. So here are some random thoughts and topics of the day:

  • It’s getting f’n cold in Germany. Time to start wearing more than just T-Shirts.
  • All in all I had a pretty good day. I made quite a lot of calls today which is good since oftentimes I have my fair share of problems with calling people I don’t know.
  • Shouldn’t somebody whose second name is Waldmann (which is Forestman in English) be a bearded big guy with a flannel shirt instead of a lanky, blond average-sized dude? Ever thought about that?

The First Challenge – Angry Birds Workout Plan

From now on I’m going to challenge myself regularly. Those challenges can and will take place in all fields of personal development. I will start with challenges over a period of 30 days although that may change over time. If you guys have any suggestions for challenges I would love to here them.

For starters I will go with Steve Kamb’s Angry Birds Workout Plan from NerdFitness.com.

In general I like sports a lot. I love running and I try out new plans for muscle building multiple times over the course of a year only to drop them almost exactly a month later. It’s crazy! Everytime I get the first results I get a nice confidence boost. What follows is me starting to get lazy and dropping the first training days. In addition my diet which has been pretty strict for the first 30 days gets slowly replaced by unhealty food. Over the course of a week or two I drop my training and diet almost completely and get back to my old habits. From there on I can’t get myself to train sometimes for weeks sometimes for month to come.

Right now I have been running 3 times in the last 7 days (since my decision to turn over my life). Before that I didn’t run for over 2 months. I also did the first 3 weeks of Max Capacity Training in mid august finished the test and didn’t do a damn thing after that. I just dropped it completely although it’s a pretty cool program.

So I’ve been lazy for at least two month now and one of the first things I will change is to get back into shape. Not just a shape I had before but one that is far more awesome than that. I’m going to get in the best shape of my life.

I already started running again and made it a part of my new morning routine. With the Angry Birds Challenge I will once again pick up the quest to add a lot more muscle to my body. So for the next 30 days it’s going to be Push Ups, Planks and back exercises every second day. I will possibly drop the squats at first because they don’t work well with the running. Right now running is so much fun and just gives me an awesome feeling for the rest of the day. Wouldn’t want to drop that at the moment.

The Challenge will start today and one of my main goals is to be able to do some decent pull ups. Right now I could propably do 1 or 2 at a time. So let’s get it on.

Starting Points:

  • Weight: about 90kg
  • Body fat: 21%
  • Muscles: 42%

New morning routine

One of the first things I changed almost immediately was my sleeping habits. I hadn’t slept well for some days which is quite unusual for me and besides that I always had my problems getting up in the morning. I read an article by Steve Pavlina called “How to become an early riser”. One of the key points is to get up in the morning always at a fixed time and go to bed when you become sleepy in the afternoon. It’s one awesome piece of text and you should definitely read it.

Getting up at a fixed time

So I started to get up at 6 o’clock instead of 7:30. I was motivated enough to do it the first days although my body wanted to stay in the warm bed. After doing it for a week now I think my body has mostly adapted to 6 o’clock and it has become pretty easy to get up in the morning. I was sleepy the first day or two but overall I would have expected the transition to be far worse. After 2 or 3 days I already felt better and more energized when I woke up. Since monday I feel absolutely tremendous in the morning and I have more energy throughout the day.

The best thing about it is that I don’t need to go to bed earlier than before. I get sleepy now between 23:00 and 23:30 which was my normal time as well when I slept until 7:30. That’s 90 minutes of extra time I have every day! So this helps you to sleep less and feel better instead of sleeping a lot and feeling like shit none the less.

No coffee sir!

I also stopped drinking coffee immediately. I had read about caffeine addiction for the first time in “Coach yourself to success” by Talane Miedaner. If you drink coffee regularly there is a good chance that a lot of your headaches have a direct link to that. Since coffee isn’t exactly known for helping you sleep well either it had to go.

The first day at work was hard. When I woke up everything seemed ok. I drank herbal tea instead of my usual coffee. The headaches started at about 10 o’clock and became more and more painful. At about 14:30 I had probably the worst headache of my life. From then on the pain decreased slightly but my head was still hurting when I went to bed. The next two days where accompanied by minor headaches but after surviving the first day it was really a walk in the park.

A new morning routine

Now what to do with the new found time and energy? First thing I did was getting back into running. After getting up, eating a piece of fruit and drinking a cup of tea I put on my shoes and go for a run every other day.

Running early in the morning is really awesome. Hamburg is mostly asleep at that time and the few people you meet look at you like your some crazy guy running around town while normal people sleep … which is basically what I am (besides most of the crazyness). It’s dark and rainy right now which only adds to that. A grown man running around in the darkness while intentionally jumping into every puddle he can find because he is already soaking wet from the rain may very well be something you don’t see every day. But I highly recommend it. It’s just so much fun! In addition to that I start the day with a good feeling because I know that I already took care of my training, beat my lazyness again, fought with the elements and jumped into some puddles :) .

On those days where I don’t go running I mostly read a book or some blog posts (Steve Pavlina, Nerd Fitness, etc.) or write for this blog. I also like to eat a nice breakfast in the morning so making that takes some time as well.
